Three States Your Nervous System Cycles Through
Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory mapped something that most of us recognise intuitively but have never had the language for: your autonomic nervous system operates in three distinct states, and which state you’re in determines what you’re capable of, emotionally, relationally, and physically.
Safety and connection (ventral vagal). This is what it feels like when your system is regulated. Your facial muscles are responsive, your voice is warm and modulated, your heart rate is steady. You can think clearly, empathise, play, be intimate. This is the biological foundation of secure attachment, and it’s not something you can will into existence. It’s a nervous system state.
Fight or flight (sympathetic). This is mobilisation energy. Heart rate up, muscles tense, hypervigilant. If you lean anxious in relationships, you probably know this state well: the scanning, the urgency, the overwhelming need to do something to close the distance. Your body is preparing to fight for connection or flee from the pain of losing it.
Shutdown (dorsal vagal). This is the freeze response. Numbness, dissociation, collapse, that heavy flatness where you can’t feel much of anything. If you lean avoidant, this one’s likely familiar. Your system has decided the threat is too great to fight or flee from, so it shuts down instead. Low energy, disconnection, a kind of emotional anaesthesia.
The key insight for attachment healing: secure attachment develops through consistent ventral vagal activation in relationship. When caregivers reliably helped you regulate as a child, your nervous system learned that connection equals safety. When that didn’t happen (or happened unpredictably), you learned that connection equals threat, and your system organised itself around protection rather than intimacy.
Neuroception: The Detector You Can’t Override
Porges coined the term “neuroception” to describe how your nervous system detects safety or danger without your conscious participation. This is why you can walk into a room and immediately feel uneasy without knowing why. It’s why someone’s tone of voice can activate you even when their actual words are perfectly neutral.
For those with attachment wounds, neuroception becomes biased toward threat in relationships. Your system is trying to protect you based on old information. It’s not malfunctioning. It’s doing exactly what it was trained to do. The problem is the training data is from your childhood, and the current situation may be nothing like what your body thinks it is.
Somatic practices help you update that information by creating new, embodied experiences of safety that your nervous system can actually register. Not through argumentation (your nervous system doesn’t process arguments), but through repeated physical experiences that slowly teach it: this is different. This person is different. This moment is safe.
Implicit Memory: What Your Body Knows That You Don’t
Much of your attachment patterning lives in implicit memory, the unconscious memory system that stores procedures, emotional responses, and body-based learning. You don’t remember learning to ride a bike. Your body just knows. Similarly, you don’t consciously remember learning that love equals abandonment, or that needing someone equals weakness, or that being vulnerable means being hurt. Your body just knows.
This implicit learning happened before your prefrontal cortex (the thinking, narrating, analysing part of your brain) was fully developed. It was absorbed directly through sensation, touch, tone of voice, the presence or absence of a calm body nearby when you were distressed. No words. No narrative. Just experience encoded directly into muscle, breath, and threat-detection circuitry.
This is the fundamental reason insight alone doesn’t create change. You can’t talk your way out of implicit memory because implicit memory doesn’t operate in the domain of language. You need new embodied experiences to create new implicit learning.
Interoception: Your Overlooked Sense
Interoception is your sense of your internal body state: heart rate, breathing, temperature, muscle tension, gut feelings. Most people don’t think of this as a “sense” in the way they think about sight or hearing, but it turns out to be fundamental to emotional regulation and secure attachment.
Your body’s connective tissue (the myofascial system) has a 9:1 ratio of sensory to motor nerves. It’s primarily designed to feel, not to move. This system is constantly sending information to your brain about your internal state, and the quality of that communication matters enormously.
Research shows that better interoceptive awareness correlates with improved emotional regulation, reduced anxiety, better decision-making, and more secure attachment patterns. When you can’t feel what’s happening inside, you can’t regulate it. And many people with attachment wounds have learned to disconnect from their bodies as a survival strategy, which was adaptive then and is limiting now.
Somatic practices gently rebuild this connection. Not by forcing you to feel everything all at once (that would be overwhelming and counterproductive), but by carefully, gradually expanding your capacity to notice internal sensation without being flooded by it.
Co-Regulation: You’re Wired for This
Here’s something worth sitting with: humans are biologically wired for co-regulation. Your nervous system is designed to regulate through connection with others. When a distressed infant is held by a calm caregiver, the infant’s heart rate slows, stress hormones decrease, and the nervous system returns to baseline. This isn’t weakness or dependency. This is how we’re built.
The question isn’t whether you need other people to help you regulate (you do, everyone does). The question is whether you’ve had enough experiences of safe co-regulation that your nervous system learned connection can be regulating rather than dysregulating.
Secure attachment develops when co-regulation experiences are consistent enough to build what we call “regulatory capacity,” the ability to return to that ventral vagal state of safety after activation. You learn to calm down, not by white-knuckling through the activation alone, but because someone else’s calm nervous system showed yours the way.
